CIRCLE (2015)

October 17, 2015

A Vicious Circle of Liars: A Film Review

Circle is a psychological horror feature. From Taggart Productions and Votiv Films, the film stars Julie Benz (Saw V), Mercy Malick, Autumn Federici and Michael Nardelli. Circle had its World Premiere at the Seattle International Film Festival, in May of 2015. And, Circle is a compelling feature that looks at people's inherent biases, in a psychological fashion. The characters are diverse, but most of their motivations are unified by their will to survive. Though, some find their own demise a little quicker than others. Overall, the film is an entertaining feature. But, the social message is a little disconcerting; dishonesty has its rewards.

Circle: Back to Thought-Provoking Sci-Fi…Producer/Actor Michael Nardelli Talks To SGS

Dig if you will the picture of you and I waking up in a black void. We’re standing on discreet red dots, two amongst many, each holding a person, 48 others, all of us arranged in two concentric circles. In the middle is a black orb, and on the floor around that orb is a bristle of white arrows, one tip pointed at each person.

Interview with Michael Nardelli star of Circle

If you read my articles frequently, you are probably aware I have spoken ad nauseam about my dislike for the torture and gore filled romps being passed off as horror films these days. I’m not saying Circle is necessarily a horror film, although I guess you could potentially view it that way. The comparison which can be made however, is the game like nature of Circle and films such as Saw. In both cases you have people trapped in a room and the only way to get out is to make some sort of sacrifice. In Circle, each character has the opportunity to vote to send one of the 49 other people trapped with them to their death. The film has a “game” just as intriguing as it’s predecessors, with none of the stomach turning mutilation.
